Carbon Reduction Motions at Thursday's AGM

If you are a UWE student, we need YOU to vote for a sane climate policy at Frenchay THIS THURSDAY!!

A group of UWE students is proposing a series of climate change motions at the student union AGM on Thursday that includes enhancing public transport, bicycle, and pedestrian access, banning patio heaters and preventing the SU from subsidizing short haul flights- this last motion in particular is coming up against stiff opposition, and we need as many UWE students as possible to be there this Thursday Nov. 29th 1-3pm at Frenchay 2D67 to vote for it! It’s going to be controversial, informative, and probably, pretty damned good ENTERTAINMENT, so if you are a UWE student..... be there and vote!

The measures would require the Student Union:

o to lobby the University to phase out inefficient, outdated and wasteful electric devices like incandescent lightbulbs

o to lobby the University to set Greenhouse Gas Emissions reduction targets

o to refrain from financially contributing to short haul flights within Europe

o to lobby the University and relevant agencies to lower the cost and improve the frequency of public transport, and to improve bicycle and pedestrian access to campuses

How much oil does a tank burn ?
Or a jet fighter ?
Or a helicopter ?
Or a stealth bomber ?
Or a warship ?
Or an aircraft carrier ?

Why not protest against american imperialist wars first and foremost ?
How much misery can the american state pour onto the rest of this world ?

I read somewhere that the amount of fuel consumed by an army tank runs into GALLONS PER MILE!

But the original source appears to have been wiped off the internet.

Does anyone know?

I am very concerned about the war in Iraq and how many billions of $ are pumped into it and the other wars that are based on supporting the west's ever increasing demands for oil.

I believe though in acting locally and thinking globally. I think that this is the most effecient use of my time.

It is so easy to critised what other people are doing rather than looking within ourselves and thinking what we can be doing to help save OUR planet.
