March 2008 is the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died, along with many US and British servicemen and women. Iraq’s infrastructure and civil society remain in shreds. Gordon Brown has promised troop withdrawals but there are still 5,000 British soldiers in Iraq.

Most Iraqis see the occupying armies as the primary cause of violence and regard their withdrawal as the key to national reconciliation. The USA’s ‘surge’ and its reporting in the media is aimed more at smoothing the US presidential election campaign than at solving the problems of the Iraqi people.

At the same time Britain is Bush's key partner in the escalation of the war in Afghanistan which is fast becoming a disaster mirroring that in Iraq. Meanwhile, Israel continues violating international laws with its illegal settlements and collective punishment of Palestinian people. The people of Lebanon are still recovering from the Israeli invasion in August 2006'. And despite the latest US intelligence reports on Iran saying that there is no nuclear weapons programme the USA, with British backing, continues to threaten an attack.

This meeting is an unrivalled opportunity for people in Bristol to hear first hand from participants in events in Iraq and Lebanon.

Was going to cost us in the UK £1 billion, now costing £7 billion.

Total cost is now estimated at $3 trillion, when it was supposed to cost estimated the costs in the range of $50 to $60 billion.

Mind-blowing figures! Is this part of why the US and UK are going into recession?
