Hezbollah journalist speaks in Bristol

category bristol | peace | press release author Monday February 25, 2008 17:44author by info@bristolstopwar Report this post to the editors

Whoever hides behind the name ‘Bristol Blogger’ seems to have joined David Cameron in wanting Bristolians not to hear Ibrahim Moussawi – the editor of Al Intiqad, newspaper of Hezbollah. Nationally, the Stop The War Coalition has issued the statement below. Come to the meeting on Friday evening to hear him yourself, along with Hassan Jumaa, President of the Iraqi Oil Workers’ Union

See http://bristol.indymedia.org/article/687947 for details of the meeting

The leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron, argued in Parliament that it was "vital" that Prime Minister Gordon Brown's government prevent Ibrahim Moussawi from entering the United Kingdom to attend the World Against War conference organized by the Stop the War Coalition in December2007. To support his call for a ban, Cameron claimed that Moussawi is the "head of the viciously anti-Semitic TV station Al-Manar," which is affiliated with Hizbullah. In fact, while Moussawi has headed Al-Manar's foreign news desk and hosted a political talk show, he was never in charge- and he left his job at the station more than three years ago.

To hear Moussawi describe the campaign to prevent him from travelling to European countries sounds not unlike Oceania's attempts to stamp out "thoughtcrime" in George Orwell's novel, "1984."

"Governments", Moussawi argues, "should not censor what people have to say and confiscate the right of intelligent people to decide what to hear or not to hear. I'm a staunch defender of political freedoms and freedom ofspeech,"

Moussawi categorically denies the accusation that he has promoted "anti-Semitic" views. "I would challenge anyone to provide evidence of any word that I have said that is hateful or anti-Semitic," he says, adding that he himself has been a victim of discrimination and has therefore made a special effort to eschew any form of prejudice. "I have nothing against Jews. I have nothing against any human being, whether because of religion, gender or political affiliation," he explains. "I'm a human being who believes in dignity, independence and freedom. I'm a bridge-builder and I've always been an advocate of dialogue and discussion." In February 2005 he invited five Jewish rabbis to a conference in Beirut and hosted their visit.

"I want to refute this notion that there is a 'clash of civilizations’. I believe that all over the world, people want the same things. We all want to be with our families; we all want to come back to our kids at the end of the day and bring bread to their tables and give them a good education, to live in harmony and peace."

Of his family, Ibrahim said that he had two sons; the first has the name Ibrahim, the second Jesus. If he had a third son he would name him Moses.

One thing that Moussawi seeks to combat is the very notion that Hizbullah is a terrorist organization. "I would say that we are in the midst of a war of terminology. It is a war of definitions that we should pay attention to.” Far from being a terrorist outfit, he argues, Hizbullah is a legitimate resistance group that is fighting to regain occupied land like the Shebaa Farms and to secure the return of prisoners held by Israel. "Many people try to demonize the resistance, but resistance is the right of people under occupation," Moussawi says, a claim supported by the UN Charter.

Moussawi has a response for those who would question the idea of inviting a Hizbullah media man to an anti-war event. "Who can talk about [the need to] stop the wars and [achieve] peace more than those who are suffering from the occupation and the atrocities and the massacres and the aggressions? We want genuine peace. We don't want compromises and we don't want to go again and again to the same vicious cycle every 10 years or five years, where you make a temporary settlement and you end up with another war coming. The roots of the problem, the roots of the cause of the problem, should be addressed."

I find that hard to believe. What about the many, many photographs of Hezbollah doing Nazi salutes?

Maybe that's something to do with the fact that Mein Kamf is a best seller in the Arab World...

It's probably worth noting the 5 rabbis mentioned as visiting Beirut were part of an obscure religious fundamentalist jewish sect - Neturei Karta - that want to see secular Israel destroyed.
They also attended Ahmadinejad's notorious Holocaust denial conference in 2006 ...

Ummm. Are we now defining groups' political ideologies according to how they salute their flag! Odd political method.

The "Nazi" or Roman or Belamy salute has been used by a lot of groups other than the Nazis (Its called the Roman Salute, figure it out). American school kids used to salute the Stars and Stripes with it every morning. It doesn't have the same Nazi associations as it does here in some parts of the world.

It's unfortunate that Hezbollah give the Zionists and racists the chance score petty points like this, but hey. i think they're more interested in defending their country and lives than worrying what photos some keyboard-Zionist in Bristol will drag up.

On Mein Kampf in Arabic. Well it's a European book; therefore all Europeans are Nazi and anti-Semites eh?

These are the petty arguments of the racists in the White House and they don't stand for sh*t.

American Nazi school kids?

It is not just a salute in isolation. There is the black shirts, the anti-semitism, the cult of the suicide bomber, the promotion of violence, the obssession with propaganda and extremist Islamism all defining the group's ideology.
To claim that in a westernised nation like Lebanon the salute "doesn't have the same Nazi associations as it does here" is willfully blind.

AntiZionist - your rather poorly written post seems to suggest that the White House believes that all Europeans are Nazis???

And as for Hezbollah defending their country (Lebanon) - can you explain how calling for the destruction of a neighbouring state, launching rockets at civillian positions, crossing the border and kidnapping soldiers etc is defending Lebanon from Israel? To me it looks rather like deliberate attempts to provoke a military response and start an armed conflict. Which funnily enough is exactly what they say they believe in.

Does creating a war in Lebanon improve the situation of the Palestinian people? Almost certainly not. All it does is reinforce the racism between Israelis and Palestinians.

Regarding links between Nazism and the Islamic clerics in the Middle East look no further than the former Grand Mufti (cheif cleric) of Jersalem Mohammed Amin Al-Husayni. During WW2 Al-Husayni was a close ally of Adolf Hitler and according to Hannah Arendt 'The Grand Mufti's connections with the Nazis during the war were not secret; he had hoped they would help him in the implementation of some final solution in the Near East'. Funnily enough his policies are in many ways similar to those of groups such as Hezbollah.

According to the article by STW however, 'Hizbullah is a legitimate resistance group that is fighting to regain occupied land like the Shebaa Farms.' Hezbollah is a Lebanese paramilitary. The Shebaa Farms according to the UN were part of Syria. According to Kofi Annan

' On 15 May 2000, the United Nations received a map, dated 1966, from the Government of Lebanon which reflected the Government's position that these farmlands were located in Lebanon. However, the United Nations is in possession of 10 other maps issued after 1966 by various Lebanese government institutions, including the Ministry of Defense and the army, all of which place the farmlands inside the Syrian Arab Republic. The United Nations has also examined six maps issued by the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic, including three maps since 1966, which place the farmlands inside the Syrian Arab Republic."[35]

In a June 18, 2000 statement, the Security Council noted that Israel and Lebanon had confirmed to the Secretary General, that identification of the withdrawal line was solely the responsibility of the UN and that both sides would respect the line as identified. Moreover, the Security Council took note, "with serious concern," of reports of violations - by Hezbollah[38] - that had occurred since June 16, 2000, and called upon the parties to respect the line drawn by the United Nations.'

STW were rightly incensed by the US and UK's disregard of the UN when they went to war in Iraq. Equally they quite rightly frequently decry Israel's continued defiance of the UN. However it would appear that for groups such as Hezbollah to do the same thing is a position the Stop This War and Start Another One Coalition fully endorses.

...and they wonder why the mass support the anti-war movement had 5 years ago has dissipated.

Your shipment of fail has arrived, AntiZionist - the Bellamy salute was phased out in 1942 because of it's similarity to the Nazi salute.

War=Peace has hit the nail on the head.

Anyone who doubts the virulent anti-Jewish (as opposed to anti - zionist) feeling that exists in the Arab word could do a lot worse than check out the highly popular Egyptian soap opera "Horseman Without a Horse". One of the central themes is the way in which a group of Jewish Zionists are struggling to keep their plan for world domination - The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion - secret from the rest of the world's population. The Egyptian government (remember, this is a country that is at peace with Israel) claimed that the series was not anti-semitic, and accused the Israeli and American governments (both complained about the content) of trying to dictate Egyptian telivision viewing?!?!

I fear that until Arab governments tackle the hatred of Jews that is so strong in their countries, then there will be no chance for a meaningful and lasting peace. I had a conversation with one SWP / Respect person who told me that "The Israelis are the ruling class and the Palestinians are working class" - they really believed that it was that simple. There have been grave wrongs committed by both sides in the Israeli / Palestinian conflict and to demonise one side whilst sanctifying the other will do nothing to help anyone in the long run. I suspect that at some point in the not too distant future certain embarrassed cadres of the left will be trying to rewrite history and pretend that it wasn't them who offered support to some extreme right wing, homophobic, Arab nationalists.

And while we're on the subject of television series let's not forget that charming little Syrian-made number 'Diaspora' (Ash Shatat) shown on Hezbollah's Al Manar TV station. The station that by a remarkable coincidence Mousawi, before he became the editor of Al Intiqad the publication "linked to Hezbollah", used to work for.

'Diaspora' was a 30 part drama series claiming to tell the story of Zionism from 1812 to the establishment of the state of Israel. Here's the opening text from the series that sets the scene:

"Two thousand years ago the Jewish Rabbis established an international government aiming at maintaining the world under its control and suppressing it under the Talmudic commands, and totally isolating them from all of the people.

Then the Jews started to incite wars and conflicts, while those countries disclaimed them. They falsely pretended to be persecuted, awaiting their savior, the Messiah, who willterminate the revenge against the Goyim that their God, Jehovah, started.

In the beginning of the 19th century, the international government decided to increase the conspiracies and the Jewish international secret government was established, headed by Amschel Rothschild."

Obviously based on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion it depicts all the old anti-semitic chestnuts about secretive global Jewish cabals and even included the "blood libel".

Here's a brief transcript of that:

[Al Manar transcript starts here]

Title: Jews take blood from Christian child for Passover matzo.

Scene I: Two men talking.

Rabbi (speaking to a young man seated next to him) : We have a task from the leadership. We need the blood of a Christian child before Passover for matzo.

Scene II: Dimly lit hallway. Rabbi with young man behind him. A third man enters dragging a child.

Christian child: Nathan save me!

Nathan: Don't be afraid.

Rabbi nods to the young man who nods to Nathan. Nathan forces the child down onto the floor and cuts his throat. Someone catches the blood in a bowl.

Scene III: Rabbi and young man standing, eating matzo. While chewing they nod to one another as if to say, "We have done what we need to do. Now we have our reward."
