PUBLIC MEETING

WOMEN IN PRISON – A CALL FOR ACTION

Come and hear Jean Corston present her recommendations for a ‘radical new approach’, and how we can help put these into action.

“The nature of women’s custody in many of our prisons needs to be radically re-thought.”

The government’s report by Baroness Jean Corston provides a blueprint for creating a system to meet the needs of women offenders and their families, and to reduce re-offending. Published a year ago, the report’s recommendations were accepted by the government but have not been funded or implemented.

The Corston Report found that:
o nearly two-thirds of women in prison have a drug problem
o the majority have experienced domestic violence or sexual abuse
o at least 70% have mental health problems
o 18,000 children are separated from their mothers by imprisonment
