More Trouble for Bristol Airport

SouthWestWatch - An eye of Judgment on the Great and the Good in the West

New from SWRDAwatch - SouthWestWatch - a mainline of gossip that pierces the heart of local news. Yes, SWRDAwatch is expending its operation to watch even more than the watchmen. This post is from our AirportWatch department; and Bristol Airport is in trouble, again.

Bristol Airport has suffered another blow as Ryanair announces that it is suspening five routes this winter. One of the routes adds more embarrassment as it is to Oporto, Portugal, one of Bristol's twin-cities. Other routes to be lost include flights to Austria, Hungary and Poland.

Ryaniar are not alone; Easyjet also pulled a route to Poland in November and nationally the picture has been bleak too as budget airline Zoom collapsed in August. This makes claims by the airport to need expansion even harder to sustain - and they face determined opposition from the Stop Bristol Airport Expansion campaign.

AirportWatch suspects that management are under real pressure as also this year SWRDA (via minutes released under the Freedom of Information Act) reveled the quango is reluctant to fund expansion any further.

The past record has not been all smiles (for executives anyway) as in 2007 the closure of a runway due to safety fears also catapulted the airport to national prominence, making Bristol Airport a laughing stock as even topical news-comedy show, Mock the Week, joined in the mirth over the runway.
