Bath death in police custody

category bath | policing | news report author Wednesday December 24, 2008 16:15author by Pseudoname Report this post to the editors

Death of a 39 year-old man in police custody yesterday.

There was a death in police custody in Bath yesterday. There are currently very few news reports - I was only able to find one on the BBC at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/somerset/7799226.stm

Although news agencies are going to be slow, it does seem as though the police and IPCC are dragging their feet on this one. Couldn't it have been announced this morning to catch the news instead of mid afternoon to miss the news? The BBC article states that IPCC are not to announce his name until after new year?

We are searching for info on this, so any info anyone has about this would be much appreciated - who the bloke was/how he died etc. Will keep Bristol IMC updated with any actions planned as a result.

Seems a bit hasty and ridiculous to talk about ' victims of the pigs ' until you get some facts. There again why should you let truth get in the wy of blind prejudice?

fine, call the police pigs if you want, but the more of this site i read, the less i feel that what we have here is a new politics, but just old fashioned, unreconstructed empty vessel crassness.

If this is a suspicious death then it must be investigated, and sites like bim are useful to help force issues like that, but if you want me to join you in the gutter and start calling people 'pigs', or any of the other terms i'm sure you have for various people and professions, then forget it.

I know all about this - the chap who died was a friend.
The last thing he would have wanted was for his demise to be used as a vehicle for hate or political gain. He was a decent bloke and would NEVER have called the police 'pigs'. So don't do it on his behalf.

The previous comment is claiming to be a friend of the dead man and knowing all about it.

A man has died in police custody and there appears to be a news blackout on the story. If you know anything about this issue then TELL US.

The dead man is named as Mark Read (also known as Graeme). His name was not held back until after new year.

I wonder what getting arrested “for his own safety” mean. It may be a reference to arrest under Mental Health laws but not if he'd been drinking which is likely.

A man dies in police custody at a Bath police station. There is a strange reference to him being arrested "for his own safety" while this was obviously not the case. The announcement is delayed so that it is not reported. A handful of online sources report it, GWR Radio - to their credit - reported it in their news bulletins. I don't know but doubt that it made national radio or television news and it appears that no newspapers have reported it.
