Emergency Vigil For Gaza

category bristol | peace | announcement author Sunday January 04, 2009 16:57author by info@bristolstopwar Report this post to the editors

Every night since the air attacks on Gaza started there have been vigils on the Centre (opposite the Hippodrome) with people coming from all over the city. Help us make the vigil on MONDAY 5th JANUARY the largest yet. Meet from 5pm on the Centre. Then every night this week at the same time.

Israel has started its ground assault on Gaza. Within hours of troops entering Gaza, hospitals reported that 23 people had been killed and that twenty of them were civilians.

Yesterday (Saturday) demonstrations across the world called for an immediate stop to the carnage. Here in Bristol we had one of the largest demonstrations in recent years. Every country in the world bar one wants the killing and destruction to stop now. But just as it did in the Lebanon War in 2006, The United States has given the green light to Israel to intensify its barbarism.

The US is blocking all UN calls for an immediate ceasefire with the tacit compliance of the British government, which calls for an immediate ceasefire while at the same time endorsing America's refusal to allow any discussion in the United Nations to achieve this end.

When Israel broke the six month ceasefire on November 4, it was the trigger for this long planned invasion, deliberately timed for the last few weeks of George Bush's presidency and a few weeks before Israeli elections, in which all the leading politicians are competing as to how many Palestinians they can kill.

Bristol Stop The War Coalition, Bristol Palestine Solidarity Campaign and others are following up yesterday's demonstration with events aimed at showing the continued opposition in the city to Israel's attack and our government's acceptance of it. Please try to join us in the local protests.

This is what some of the children of Palestine are being taught

These children hold the future of future of peace in their hands. Whilst these teachings go on I feel very depressed about he possibility of peace in The Middle East.

I know what you mean. There seems to be people on both sides willing to just pour hatred on crisis. Take this story on the heartbreaking killing of 7 family by an IDF artillery shell - http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3650578,00.html - then read the comments. So much hate, so little compassion for the 3 dead toddlers. It's very depressing.
