![]() Vodafone have reached an agreement with HMRC to avoid paying a massive £6bn tax bill. This would be enough money to pay for almost all the welfare cuts proposed by the Government. This week there was a sit in protest in Vodafone's flagship store in Oxford Street. Tomorrow there are similar protests happening around the country. There isn't one organised for Bristol, do we want to organise one? Vodafone have reached an agreement with HMRC to avoid paying a massive £6bn tax bill. Not only do they avoid Tax (off Shore, Non Domicile, Trust funds), but these companies also often make money at the Taxpayers expence by paying poverty wages which have to be topped up with Tax Credits and Housing Benefit.
I think it's a great idea.
That blog has been very public about its plans for shutting down stores in London. We need to remember that the Police spend a lot of time on this page. The reason there were so many cops on the demo last saturday was as a direct result of the callout on this site, we know beacause they told the organisers so.
Organising actions where the element of surprise is needed is best not done on indymedia, Organise among your friends or groups then spread the message to others preferably face to face.
Other cities may not be so worried but based on the polices behaviour on saturday we should have cause for concern.
The headline is wrong.
There is a difference between tax avoidance (legal) and tax evasion (illegal).
What Vodafone have done isn't tax evasion, they have availed themselves of legal loopholes, i.e. avoided tax, tax avoidance, not evasion.
As far as I can tell what they did wasn't evasion or avoidance, they simply withheld paying tax, and when it came time for HMRC to look at thier outstanding bill of six billion... well it was decided it was ok for them not to pay. This sounds inexplicable on the part of the government untill you realise Andy Halford is both a financial advisor to Vodafone and a corporation tax advisor to the treasury.
What a coincidense!
The Government looking out for the rich at the expense of everyone else?!? Who'd have thought....
