BRISTOL SPEAKERS’ CORNER

NEWS RELEASE

25 June 2011

THE BEAR PIT TO BE A SPEAKERS’ BEAR PIT

Bristol Speakers’ Corner is heading to the Bristol Civic Day event at the Bear Pit on Saturday 25th June

We have been invited to join the activities at the St James Barton roundabout in the centre of Bristol.  The main event is organised by Bristol Civic Society in collaboration with the Bear Pit Improvement Group.  It will take place in the Bear Pit from 12.00-16.00 and will include a variety of stalls and entertainment.

We will open up for all-comers at 1:00 pm.  Participating speakers include: Mark Goodway, founder of the Matthew Tree project, Cllr Jon Rogers (Lib Dems) & Cllr Gus Hoyt (Green Party),  Elisabeth Winkler- self styled “real food lover” and food guru/blogger and Henry Shaftoe from the Bear Pit improvement group.

Topics to be covered will include the regeneration of the local area and importance of communities in that process.

Our platform will be open to everyone who wants to speak.

WHAT IS “SPEAKERS’ CORNER”?

It’s new to Bristol, having been formed only last year, and our Speakers’ Corner offers the public a voice.  This will be our fifth event this year. All are welcome to listen and participate.  We provide the soapbox and the speaker system.  The rest is up to the people of Bristol.  (Bristol Speakers’ Corner will next be in action at the Bearpit on Saturday 25th June.)

Bristol Speakers’ Corner believes that association between citizens and the free, face-to-face exchange of ideas, information and opinions – with each other as well as with the decision-takers among them – is a key to rebuilding trust and participation in Britain’s civil society and developing vibrant civil institutions and robust rights in emerging democracies.
