Bristol schoolteachers to demonstrate against the English Defence League (EDL)
The Bristol Branch of the National Union of Teachers is proud to be supporting the demonstration organised by We Are Bristol on 14th July. We call on all Bristolians to join us at the Fountains at 11a.m on 14th July. We welcome the support of the SW TUC and the major trade unions to resist this attack on Bristol by the EDL. We fully support the Pride events which will also take place on 14th July.
We deplore the message of racism, bigotry and hate being put forward by the EDL and, especially, their anti- Islamic attacks on Muslim communities. We welcome the diversity of Bristol schools and communities and the fact that pupils in our schools are able to work together freely alongside each other and celebrate their cultural diversity. The NUT believes that they should be able to continue to do this without the fear of racial attacks and the sort of divisions brought about by far right groups such as the EDL. Our experience in Bristol schools tells us that communities in Bristol share our view that the racist EDL are not welcome in our City.
We are pleased to be involved with We Are Bristol and welcome the initiative to organised the demonstration on July 14th.
NUT Divisional Secretary and former NUT National president Nina Franklin said “ We urge all Bristolians to come out on the 14th July and give the message to the EDL that they are not welcome in our city.”
