Further details about the festival closure emerge

adelayde writes... The injunction to stop the Big Green Gathering cited the fact that the Big Green Gathering could not gain a Road Closure order in time for the event, despite the fact that the Highways Department had told the Big Green Gathering Chair, Brig Oubridge that it would be done. On Tuesday, 28th July, after the Big Green Gathering had been forced to cancel the event, a staff member found the Road Closure Order by a hedge on the Cheddar Road and subsequently another was found still pinned to a gatepost. Other signs appeared to have been taken down and evidence of the silver tape was still in place

The Big Green Gathering surrendered its licence on the advice of its lawyers because it believed that it was impossible to obtain a road closure order in the time available. It now appears that the order was in place from 20th July 2009. We find it difficult to understand why the Council and the police did not check to ensure that the order had not been made before they issued their intentions to go to court at 6.54 p.m. on Friday 24th July 2009. The Big Green Gathering on the other hand had no way of contacting the Highways Authority after the offices had closed for the weekend. The Big Green Gathering also finds it strange that no witness statement was received from the Highways Authority in support of the assertion that there was no road closure order in place

Bristol Indymedia Presents: Hacktivism - The use of digital tools in pursuit of political ends

Monday 6th July 2009, 8pm at the Cube Cinema, Stokes Croft, Bristol
Entry £3/£4 (but nobody refused entry for a lack of funds.)

Join us and speaker Mike Harris from Hacktionlab (http://hacktivista.net) for an evening discussing and debating social change and political activism through technological innovation or hacktivism.

The philosophy of hacktivism brings together different new and inclusive visions, where races, genders, creeds and ages melt within a medley of information without an owner. Come to the world of Hackers of the XXI Century, you may be one of them... Full article

A rural hack meeting in the beautiful Wye Valley

adelayde writes: Following on from the two successful gatherings so far, a rural hack meeting in the Wye Valley in June 2008 and an urban one in Leeds in October 2008, HacktionLab is pleased to announce its next rural gathering taking place between Thursday 11th and Sunday 14th June 2009 once again in the Wye Valley. The aim of HacktionLab is to have a convergence where people interested in and/or working in the areas of alternative media, renewable energy, on-line video distribution, free software and any other form of activism that utilises technology. The idea for the gathering has come from a number of years of experience gained by activists working for organisations such as Indymedia and includes specific experience from involvement in the Horizone Eco-Village in Stirling (2005), the Camps for Climate Action in Drax (2006), Heathrow (2007) and Kingsnorth (2008) as well as the No Borders camp at Gatwick (2007) and recent experience from the G20 protests in London in March and April 2009....Full article.

Article about travellers prompts complaints

Faye writes; This story appears today and its got my blood boiling. I for one have had enough of this joke of a rag getting away with printing this kind of rabble rousing racist crap with my city's name on it. I'm writing to the PCC to stick an official complaint in. I know it probably wont make any difference, but I can't sit and let them spew this sort of hatred anymore. If anything, it will let the editor of this terrible newspaper know that its just not on. If he choses to do anythign about it is up to him but I reckon if I and anyone else keeps complaining whenever we see a breach of the code, someone somewhere will get the message. Especially if they keep havng to print apologies. I know its not very Anarchist and direct action so forgive me for ranting.... full article.
