As you will notice, Bristol Indymedia is up!

As you will notice, Bristol Indymedia is up! We are back and running using temporary server arrangements and will be altering these systems over time to both improve the site access and its security. We are also running an improved website system, Oscailt. This is an independent media centre content management system developed by the Indymedia Ireland Tech Group. The word "Oscailt" is an Irish word meaning "open". There are still changes being made to this code-base, so please bear with us while we fix it up.

As you may (or may not know) the website was taken down by the police and one Bristol Indymedia volunteer arrested following a posting on the site that alleged damage to cars being transported by train. We are still taking legal advice about our next move regarding the police actions and will keep you informed of any developments. The volunteer still has to answer police bail in October. We wish to take this opportunity to thank the many groups and people who helped us though this period including Liberty, National Union of Journalists, Bristle, The Bristolian, Privacy International, Bristol Wireless, Urban75, Cube Cinema, Bristol Dissent, Mark Thomas, Sam 'Fisheye' and Plucker & the whole slush fund collective and all those people who have offered solidarity and donated us time or money. A big thanks! It was heartening to know that when we were knocked down, there were so many people there to help us back up again – it was true solidarity in action!

As a result of the police actions we have been altering some of our practices. We will be enforcing our guidelines far more robustly (including those about hiding comments and articles from persistently disruptive users). All of the policies of the site are decided at open regular monthly meetings. If you agree/disagree or just want to know more then we encourage you to attend and put your point of view across. He next monthly meeting is 15th August 2005 on 8pm at the Hillgrove Pub, Dove Street South, Kingsdown, Bristol, BS2 8LT. (http://www.britishpubguide.com/cgi-bin/pub.cgi?results:Bristol:285)

All are welcome to attend. This is your chance to shape how the site is run, so if you would like to get involved in the project then please come along. If you have any questions, or can't make it but would like to add items to the agenda, then email us at the following address: imc-bristol@lists.indymedia.org

Cheers.

The Bristol Indymedia Collective.
