Waiting at the traffic lights on route to the park to enjoy a rest day after an intense week involved in the organisation of an event about Climate Justice here in Bogota, the captial of Colombia, an old man approached us. He was dressed as smartly as he could, dark suit, a tie and a felt hat, but he didnt look like your average suited man. Old, weather face by the sun that makes guessing ages very difficult, a calmness, resignation about him. He held a carefully handwritten sign in his hand, "please help my family, we are displaced from Bolivar( a region where there is huge amounts of palm planted) god bless you." read full story / add a comment

'But at least do something, give me something to watch on the news....'

This was a message sent to the Comutiny email account from Lucy (who has commented in a previous article that CoMutiny are showing themselves for the selfish and self centered lot that they are....) When asked to come and see what was going on, the reply was: 'You don't need me, I'm a happy nobody just watching the world go by, satisfied with my capitalist lot.

I think this sums up to a degree the passive state into which many of us have been dulled into by the state by which I mean, the government, the mass media, and ourselves.

If we are happy with our capitalist lot, then we perhaps should think about how these comforts come about. I believe our luxuries derive from the suffering of others around the world. By this I mean that the exploitation of natural resources (such as coal, oil, gold, water etc.) and of human beings (through their labour, invasions of their territories and the imposition of our (Western) ways of living) in the the so-called 'developing' countries, funds our comfortable existence. read full story / add a comment
