3rd November - 22nd November
Easton is a vibrant, multi-cultural, yet deprived inner city ward in Bristol. This ward has seen a high level of organic regeneration due to its proximity to the city centre, most of which has occurred in an ad-hoc manner. An influx of young professionals and creative types has been juxtaposed with a host of derelict sites and a lack of sustainable local amenities.

The Love Easton Urban Design Task Group was formed in February 2009 by a group of residents. It aims to create a strategic document for the Easton area to help transform it in a controlled manner, falling in line with the visions and aspirations of the local community and city wide policy. Their objective is to work in a small group to find pioneering and innovative ways to encourage the community to have their say and be involved in the consultation process to transform their neighbourhood.

Consultation
A month-long consultation will be held in Easton, launching on Saturday October 3, during the Stapleton Road Street Fair.

A ‘hub’ will be set up at 5 Stapleton Road where residents can drop in, share their stories and experiences and help create a shared vision for the future of the ward.

An exhibition will be developed at the community cafe as the consultation process gets underway. This will then move to the Architecture Centre, Bristol, where it will run from November 3rd-22nd.

Legislation introduced in April 2009 calls on local authorities and developers to involve local people in decisions that affect them.

Local residents and architects have taken the initiative to find out what their community wants during a month-long intensive consultation this October.

The aim is to create a shared vision for Easton’s future which will then be developed into a strategic, community-led regeneration document that reflects local people’s aspirations.

An urban regeneration document which clearly sets out residents’ visions will not only give the community more power at the planning stage but will also be invaluable for developers and the local authority.

Producing a well-researched and relevant regeneration document will make the community’s wishes clear. Whilst we cannot guarantee that the document will be adopted fully, it should be invaluable in supporting the local authority’s obligation to consult.

This Thursday, 3 September, sees a second public meeting for the local community being held at Easton Community centre (ECC), starting at 6.30pm.

The first meeting was held on 5 August at the same venue. Organised by an ad hoc group of local residents and community activists, it was called in response to concerns over local street crime and the trepidation this was causing amongst the community. read full story / add a comment

Following preliminary meetings in July and August and after gathering nearly five hundred local supporters on the social networking site Facebook, BAF is now organised and campaigning. [It will next meet at The Stag and Hounds, Old Market, 7.30pm, 25 August and again on 8 Sept].

BAF Press Officer Glenn Vowles said,
“Bristolians Against Fluoridation was formed to oppose the imposed mass medication of Bristol and the surrounding areas in BANES, N Somerset, and S Glos. that would result from NHS South West instructing the water company to fluoridate our tap water. Our view is that fluoridation: is not ethical; does not work; is not safe; and is not wanted.”
