Five Bristol residents were charged on Monday 18th June with 2 charges relating to their occupation of BAE Systems in Filton, Bristol on Thursday 26th April this year. The group occupied an office in New Filton House, the Bristol HQ of the arms firm, for one and a half hours. Hanging a banner reading 'BAE Systems: Corruption and Destruction: Business as Usual' from the office, the group were drawing attention to the dropped Serious Fraud Office investigation into corruption with the Al-Yamamah deal with Saudi Arabia. read full story / add a comment

The Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol West, Stephen Williams, has decided to join the side of the record companies in his signing of an early day motion "COPYRIGHT TERM FOR PRODUCERS AND PERFORMERS". In this motion, he and the other signatories ask the government to ignore all the work done by the recent Gowers report on intellectual property, and extend the copyright on audio recordings to 70 years after the death of the musicians, rather than a straightforward 50 years. read full story / add a comment

People from Espacio Bristol-Colombia and Bristol Rising Tide today picketed the Royal West of England Academy with a visual memorial of some of the people killed by the army and right-wing paramilitaries in the BP-controlled area of Colombia. The gallery is currently exhibiting the National Portrait Awards which are sponsored by BP.

The protestors stood silently in front of the gallery for two hours, holding copies of portraits from the exhibition with the faces removed, to signify the face that the faces of the murdered and disappeared are rarely seen. Public support and understanding was overwhelming, with people being visibly moved or angered to learn of BP’s activities. read full story / add a comment
