Tonight I received an email from a friend in Freiburg, Germany, about Uranium and the Touaregs, requesting that I pass it on to whoever and wherever. The link with Bristol might be tenuous, but we all know how a significant percentage of our electricity is nuclear generated, so if BIMC feels it should not be posted here, so be it. I just thought how sometimes its useful to be reminded how a global 'resource' like Uranium plays a part in our lives here in Bristol also. read full story / add a comment

bristol / globalisation / announcement Thursday November 08, 2007 04:28 by 2001 Genova G8: We are history! - call to mobilization novem
It's been years we have asked everybody to take responsibility as collectively as possible for what the mobilizations against G8 in Genoa were. The arrogance of Genoa prosecutors during the final speech of their accusation in the court case against 25 protestors accused of devastation and sacking seems to have eventually aroused the hearts and brains of 300000 people that in Genoa opposed themselves to the politics of the G8. 2001 Genova G8: We are history! - call to mobilization novem read full story / add a comment

bristol / globalisation / news report Monday October 29, 2007 19:42 by Guayusa and Guayabo in Bogota
This month we took part in a grass-roots Tribunal into Climate Justice in Bogotá. As well as hearing from some of those most vulnerable to the effects of climate chaos - always the poorest people, many of whom have already displaced at least once by the conflict in Colombia - the Tribunal highlighted how climate chaos is a consequence of a system based on economic growth and huge levels of consumption by those who can afford it. The promotion of agro-fuels was also high on the agenda. Agro-fuel crops, especially African Palm, now cover large parts of the Colombian countryside, in the wake of the violent displacement of small-scale farming communities. This is the second report by Guayusa Andina and Guayabo Pastuso from Espacio Bristol-Colombia, who are in Colombia for a year doing accompaniment work with Colombian organisations through the Red de Hermandad y Solidaridad con Colombia (Network of Friendship and Solidarity with Colombia). read full story / add a comment

In January this year, Bristol hosted Jose Julio Perez and Armando Perez to tell us about the forced displacements of villagers affected by the El Cerrajón mine. El Cerrejón is the world's largest open-pit coal mine, which is located in La Guajira in northern Colombia. On Friday 26 th October, Bristol will proudly host Freddy Lozano and Jairo Quiroz of the SINTRACARBON mine workers' union. Freddy Lozano is one of the leaders of the coal miners' union at the Cerrejon mine in La Guajira. He is coming to Britain to speak at the AGM of BHPBilliton (one of the mining companies involved) on 25 October. We have this rare opportunity to hear first hand from the experiences of a trade unionist in Colombia at the frontline of neo-liberal capitalist globalisation and exploitation. read full story / add a comment

The first report from Bristolians Guayasa and Guayabo, who are currently in Colombia for a year providing international accompaniment (i.e. being a sort of human shield) and researching the impact of BP with local activists. This week, we released the report from last month’s solidarity mission to the oil-rich region of Casanare, where BP operates and where the Colombian army and paramilitaries continue to kill peasant farmers - either as a consequence of their protests against BP’s devastating social and ecological impact or, it would appear, simply because they are surplus to the requirements of the oil industry. read full story / add a comment

Five years on from the 2002 crisis of neo-liberalism and Argentina still has many factories and workplaces occupied by their workers, trying to create an autonomous future without capitalism or the state. This 'warts and all' documentary video chronicles the experiences and visions of these pioneers. Discussion: What can we learn from these examples? Are such actions possible here in the UK? How could they be effected? _______________________________ Afterwards, any survivors will repair to the Espacio/ Bristol Colombia Solidarity Latin Benefit Party at the 'Kalabash', 120 Cheltenham Road. read full story / add a comment
bristol / globalisation / opinion/analysis Tuesday June 05, 2007 16:10 by Crash
I had seen the effects of building the Newbury bypass on the environment and on the lives of those who resisted it. I had read about Britain’s destructive forestry practices, and of deforestation in the ‘developing’ world. And I am working however I can to stop the South Bristol Ring Road from ever being built. But nothing prepared me for a recent visit to Tasmania, with the last of its beautiful, primeval forests being razed in an orgy of destruction. I do not know what to do with this knowledge locally, little of which seems to have seeped out of the remote island state. I hope that somehow I can find ways to make a connection with Bristol’s traditions of defending animal rights, ecology and resisting the pervasion of corporate power. This is a story that may help us compare the scale of these local issues with their equivalent expressions faced by activists in other parts of the world. read full story / add a comment
