+ PATRONISING HYPE FOR ID SCHEME +

The UK Identity and Passport Service (UK-IPS) will unveil a marketing
campaign for its ID scheme tomorrow (Friday 25th September) based on
animated fingerprint characters. The Home Office is propagandising
*businesses* rather than the general public in an attempt to give the
impression that the ID scheme is moving forwards whilst in reality
nothing much is actually happening. read full story / add a comment

Bristolians, not least on this newswire, have demonstrated a clear concern in recent years with global warming, climate change, peak oil, social justice and the many related topics and issues. The present UN Summit on Climate change, followed shortly by another G20 summit trying to sort out the planet, are therefore of some importance, coming as they do just 70+ days before the 'last chance' Copenhagen climate change summit.

A relief then to see Murdoch's News Corp owned New York Post coming out with a screaming headline on Monday past: 'We're Screwed!' in reference to climate change. Or is it... read full story / add a comment

"IT SEEMS DISABLED PEOPLE ARE STOPPED PROTESTING NOW"

Applicants for UK citizenship have recently been instructed to keep out of any campaigns against government policy for at least the first two years of their UK citizenship . Continuing in this spirit of making citizens subjects with no right of appeal to public opinion in protests, Bristol City Council has told disability rights activists that they would have to pay in order to gather petition signatures on land belonging to Bristol Cathedral. read full story / add a comment

Rising Tide was one of many groups taking part in the Bristol Co-Mutiny week of action. While we are group of activists focussing on tackling the root causes of climate chaos we wanted to make the links with other issues and campaigns. In particular we wanted to show that the exploitation of fossil fuels by big corporate interests is resulting in mass migration, resource wars, and widespread social injustice. Like all the groups involved in Co-Mutiny, we want to confront the forces of capitalism. This is the root cause of climate chaos. Key targets in the week of action were Bristol International Airport, BT Pensions who are investing in opencast coal mining in South Wales and the big banks which finance the oil, gas, and coal industries. read full story / add a comment
