Banks and bankers eh, what a lot of wankers. And very rich ones too, you wont find many of them scrabbling about on the dole, struggling to pay their mortgage and feed the kids, and with their pension now worthless. You wont see them at any of Bristol’s homeless shelters or soup kitchens. Well not yet anyway, but do we have plans for them! read full story / add a comment

Now we don't know about you, but we're looking forward to a year of horizontal organising! In the interests of more people having a direct say in the running of Kebele, we're currently working on ways of opening out our decision making process. We now have monthly open meetings where anyone who wants to participate and share the responsibility of this self organised, autonomous space can come along. It's not always going to be easy, but we believe we make the road by walking it, collectively putting anarchist ideas into practice. read full story / add a comment

A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail about the Bristol Cycle Expressway, a proposed cycle path that could connect large areas of north Bristol directly to the Bristol and Bath Railway Path: Josh, Be good to stay in the loop on this – as an interested cyclist who has two kids having to cross the Gloucester Rd on the way to / from school each day…. Thought of a cycle path alongside the Severn Beach line occurred to me a few years ago and I corresponded with Sustrans but they couldn’t be bothered thinking about anything other than reasons not to do it. Thanks, C C’s e-mail got me wondering—how many times has someone with a good idea for a new cycle path contacted Sustrans and received this kind of response? How many perfectly good ideas have been thrown in the bin because of a bureaucratic lack of vision from those tasked with keeping that vision whole? How many opportunities have been lost and positive energy squandered? I wonder…. This e-mail was received the same week as it was revealed by a Bristol councillor that an investigation is underway into Sustrans’ cozy relationship with the city, specifically their employees being seconded to the City Council for the Cycling City project, and exclusion of other charities and firms to win contracts from the £11.4 million budget. Frankly, it’s too much to keep a lid on, and I felt like On the Level cannot ignore this issue any longer. Because of these dispiriting experiences with Sustrans, I began to do some research into the organisation, speaking with former and current employees, co-founders, and doing research on the internet. Bear with me while I shatter some of your illusions about the UK’s “leading sustainable transport charity”…. read full story / add a comment

In October 2005 a survey by Campaign Against the Arms Trade found that Exeter uni had the 7th highest number of shares in the arms trade for a UK university. In 2008 they refused to give figures for the survey – if they don’t still have shares in the arms trade it would have been ridiculous for them to do this! read full story / add a comment

One thing is absolutely clear about the current situation in Gaza: the Israeli state is committing atrocities which must end immediately. With hundreds dead and thousands wounded, it has become increasingly clear that the aim of the military operation, which has been in the planning stages since the signing of the original ceasefire in June, is to break Hamas completely. The attack follows the crippling blockade throughout the supposed ‘ceasefire’, which has destroyed the livelihoods of Gazans, ruined the civilian infrastructure and created a humanitarian disaster which anyone with an ounce of humanity would seek an end to. read full story / add a comment

The absence of ongoing global warming over the past decade and pronounced global cooling of the past year cannot credibly be dismissed as simple local variability in weather. It is clearly global and contrary to all predictions of carbon dioxide governed global warming. The media are beginning to find news value in anthropogenic global warming doubts and the costs of ill-conceived countermeasures. Skeptical scientific opinions are increasingly being heard and conflicting new evidence appearing. The alarmists have gone too far out on a very long limb for any retreat. A cooling trend in climate would be disastrous for the whole anthropogenic global warming ideology and result in a catastrophic loss of credibility for a large sector of the scientific community. The escalating fears they express appear to be based not so much on any important new evidence as on their own increasingly desperate hopes. read full story / add a comment

While we were marching through Bristol on Saturday, 3rd January 2009, Gordon Brown was in Europe secretly asking for tacit support for the American veto, a veto that gave Israel more time to slaughter Palestinians living in Gaza. And all the time Gordon Brown was telling the world that he was calling for a halt to this atrocious Israeli offensive. read full story / add a comment
