The last week has seen the media full or outrage at the tragic death in Bradford of WPC, and mother of 3, Sharon Beshenivsky, who was shot following a robbery. This has led to a mass of outraged articles, many by former top cops, calling for the general arming of the police. In fact the death of officers whilst actually on active duty is quite small. For instance, according to http://www.policememorial.org.uk/ there has been only one police officer killed whilst actually on duty on the Avon & Somerset area in the last 15 years – on 17.5.99 a PC was killed by a stolen vehicle he was attempting to stop. Indeed the aforementioned WPC is so far this year the only police officer killed maliciously whilst on duty according to the same website. read full story / add a comment

Recently, on 23 September, swift thinking by Bristol’s No2ID campaign enabled them to catch-out Home Office Minister Andrew Burnham MP (see http://bristol.indymedia.org/newswire.php?story_id=24255). Elsewhere, other campaigners against ID cards were less fortunate. In Newcastle on 8 September 6 campaigners driving to picket the EU Justice Ministers meeting were stopped by police on their way, and held for many hours in order ‘to prevent violent disorder’. One woman’s mother’s house was later searched! They were in fact going to hold a theatrical picket, dressed in orange boiler suits with barcodes painted on their foreheads, holding a 4 metre No2ID banner (see http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/09/322769.html). read full story / add a comment

Hello, I understand many political activists in Bristol are wary of creating links with our muslim community as there are aspects of Islam which many people find that they cannot reconcile themselves to, even if they have no intention of in any way behaving prejudicially towards our muslim communities. In these troubled times I would suggest we should try to find common ground wherever we can, without having to compromise our own beliefs (most notably differences over homosexuality and women's issues.) I myself will search for common ground, but I will not paper over other genuine and fraught differences of opinion in the process. read full story / add a comment

Massive Attack! Basement Jaxx! Some other middle-brow artists! "There's only one city in the world I'd live in - f*** Paris, f*** New York - it's Bristol," stated Robert Del Naja to the BBC! Yeah! Except the fiasco of the Cannon's Marsh gigs demonstrate something more fundamental that the cities influence on music – it betrays the corporate heart of the city that now tries to force us to jump to its beat. read full story / add a comment
