bristol / transport / opinion/analysis Friday November 14, 2008 00:55 by Joshua Hart
It just seems to keep getting worse. As residents of Bristol continue to suffer the effects of rising traffic levels and shoddy transport choices on their environment, health, and quality of life, our political leaders are scared stiff of appearing to be anti-car. Their paralysis, borne out of fear of intervening in society’s petrol addiction in any meaningful way- is preventing them doing anything to actually solve the problem. Instead, like a drug addict, we increase the dose to get the same high- we widen roads and build new car parks, hoping that it will make us forget our problems. Temporarily relieved, we wake up the next morning feeling worse than ever. Politicians talk green, but their actions are digging us deeper into the gaping black hole of car dependence and climate catastrophe every day. read full story / add a comment

Following the article I read last week reporting of a police car involved in a crash at Lawrence Hill and of all the support he got, despite being his fault; I thought I'd better report this accident to demonstrate the comparitive lack of interest there is to the vunerable cyclist. read full story / add a comment

bristol / transport / event notice Tuesday October 14, 2008 17:46 by Vegans 4 Environment
The groundbreaking UN report published 2 years ago, Livestock’s Long Shadow – Environmental Issues and Actions, highlighted the fact that the livestock sector is responsible for a whapping 18% of green-house gasses. This is a higher share than transport. Despite this, we can all think of “environmentalists” that still eat meat. Why? Probably because they simply don’t realise what a huge impact eating meat has on the environment. Those animal loving vegans must be exaggerating, surely…? With more and more statistics available on the destructive impact farmed animals have on the environment, now is our chance to promote the vegan diet for the sake of the planet. The media certainly doesn’t seem to be helping us out much, so its time for us to hit the streets! The annual climate change march in London attracts thousands of people with a concern for the environment. This year the march is on Saturday 6th December. There will be a vegan block on the march made up of people from across the country. This is a great opportunity to show the large voice of vegans who are against climate change, and promote veganism. Don’t feel constrained – you don’t have to stick with the block – there will also be a chance to leaflet the whole march and members of the public too. Come along and join us on the march! If there are enough people happy to travel from central Bristol at about 8am to the march, we will organise transport. We will return to Bristol by 9.30pm. If you are interested, please email vegans4environment@doramail.com or phone/text 07595745441 by 10th November. For more information about the climate change march, visit www.campaigncc.org. read full story / add a comment

bristol / transport / news report Wednesday October 08, 2008 09:19 by Josh Hart
Bristol City Council today attempted to put the lid on a growing crisis of disillusionment with its handling of the Cycling City project by indicating to the Evening Post that the public would not be welcome at a meeting to be held this evening in Horfield to review the secretive contents of the Cycling City plan. Members of the public, for whom this is the first opportunity to examine where £23 million in taxpayer funding is to be spent, are outraged. Cyclists are inviting the public to bring their bikes and attend an emergency mass cycle ride to the "closed" meeting in protest, meeting at the sails by the fountains in the City Centre at 5:30pm, and riding to Horfield. read full story / add a comment

bristol / transport / news report Saturday October 04, 2008 18:03 by Josh Hart
Bristol Cyclists are demanding improvements to the Cycling City plan, a £22 million set of projects intended to double cycling in Bristol in the next 2-3 years. They claim there has been inadequate public consultation, and many crucial parts of the plan have been left out, such as a "bicycle expressway" link across the M32, 20mph speed limits, and adequate on-road cycle lanes. read full story / add a comment

People living on streets with heavy motor vehicle traffic are experiencing a considerable deterioration of their local social lives according to Joshua Hart, a researcher from the University of the West of England.
