bristol / peace / event notice Monday April 05, 2010 12:18 by Bristol Palestine Solidarity Campaign
Bristol-PSC will be organising a campaign stall outside Tesco-Metro in Broadmead 12.00-2.30pm on Saturday 10th April between 12-2.30pm. Helpers welcome for leafleting. We will be focusing on the boycott campaign. BACKGROUND INFO:- The Palestinian people are experiencing their 42nd year of military occupation. The siege by the Israeli army and the economic blockade have devastated their daily lives so that 'normal' life is impossible. Israel operates an entrenched system of racial Apartheid against its own non-Jewish inhabitants and has been illegally occupying Palestinian land in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights since 1967. It has sought to further annex these lands and has systematically transferred its own civilian population into these occupied territories in contravention of international law. Israel continues to build the illegal Apartheid wall, annexing vast swathes of Palestinian land in the West Bank and creating Palestinian ghettos, despite the ruling of the International Court of Justice that it is illegal. 180 Palestinian organisations and unions, in response to Israeli onslaught, have called for a campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Apartheid Israel. Anti-spying activists have been cleared of all charges using an argument that they were preventing harm to others! This can only provide what's called a 'persuasive precedent' in UK cases because it's in New Zealand, but the more examples there are in the world of this defence succeeding, the more likely it is to succeed in UK courts. read full story / add a comment

Most of you probably know about the local campaign in the South West against Noah's Ark Zoo Farm following a recent undercover investigation. There is a real chance this zoo could be closed down if the campaign is strong enough. bristol / protests / event notice Thursday March 11, 2010 18:59 by Bristol Animal Rights Collective
A Captive Animals Protection Society (CAPS) investigation that revealed Noah's Ark Zoo Farm was breeding tigers for a controversial circus owner has resulted in the zoo losing its membership of the zoo trade body BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums). An undercover investigator worked at the zoo over the summer, revealing that the tigers who arrived in June and July 2009 came from the owner of the Great British Circus, the only UK circus to use big cats. Zoo staff told the public they came from a ‘private collector’ and the zoo owner told our investigator that he had hidden the circus connection from BIAZA. One of the tigers, Tira, died 10 days after giving birth to four cubs. Shockingly, her head, paws and skin were cut off before her body was buried in breach of animal disposal legislation. Authorities are investigating whether to prosecute. All four cubs also died. Working with the BBC programme Inside Out, CAPS discovered that not only did one of the tigers travel with the Great British Circus last year, but the male named Khan even features on the circus promotional DVD performing tricks in the ring. In a strongly worded statement BIAZA said that the behaviour of the zoo “has brought the Association into disrepute and that there has been a breakdown of trust”. CAPS eagerly awaits the findings of North Somerset Council’s multi-agency investigation into our findings. This looks at issues of animal welfare and veterinary care in addition to the burial of the tiger. read full story / add a comment
